Signature Speech
My promise to the Club
by Kris Tay ATM-B CL
Every year, you would never find Kris Tay attending the Toastmasters International Convention. This year was an exception. Why?? This is because Chai Tun is representing Division D at the District 80 Evaluation Contest. As the Club President, I felt that it was my duty (??) to be there to support him.
On 28 November, I had to give Chai Tun a wake-up call at 6am because the contest started at 8am. We were at the ballroom at 7.30am to test the microphone. Boy!! Am I tired!
Whatever the outcome,
give yourself a pat on the back and say,
"Well Done!"
Yiang Ping and I were extremely excited and as the contest proceeded, we were more and more confident that he would come in within the top 3 winners. However, our assessment differed from the judges. Both Yiang Ping and I were disappointed but we know that Chai Tun had put in his best and we were extremely proud of him. As our District Governor, Gea Ban Peng, DTM, said, all contestants are already winners in their own rights.
Kris, you're next......
At the end of the Convention, Yiang Ping came up to me and said, "Kris, you have to prepare for the International Speech Contest. Chai Tun had made it to the District Level, you must do it!" To be very honest, this was the last thing on my mind.
"Deliver a speech
which will be the signature speech ,
where many would remember you by!"
Chai Tun gave me a very different perspective about taking part in the Contest. He said, "Look at it this way. Deliver a speech which will be the signature speech where many would remember you by!" That's it! I've always asked myself why I joined Toastmasters. Now, I know. I know that it's not about personal glory. It's not about me! It's about the lives that we change, one at a time! It's about the lives that we impacted, one at a time with our speeches, with our friendship, with our encouragement.
So, my promise to the Club will be:
